Reviews of the 21 systems are to be published in the journal Environmental Conservation in 2002 and will identify the major threats, establish potential alternative state(s) by the year 2025, and outline actions to maintain ecosystem resilience in each case. At the 5th ICEF, these overviews will be updated, and three discussants are to individually respond to each, with other keynote reviews offering background on trends such as in water, human population and fisheries. Beyond the scientific action, substantial attendance by government departments, international agencies, non-governmental organisations and industry is welcomed.

A text book published by Cambridge University Press in 2003 is planned, based on the updated keynote reviews and discussant papers presented at the Conference. Discussion documents are to be broadcast direct to the media and on the Web.
